In order to work effectively on something, we must know the root and nature of what it is. I believe that half the battle in facing our struggles is truly understanding why the struggles are occurring in the first place. Once we know the root of the concern and the thoughts, feelings, experiences, and ideas that reinforce its existence, we can then begin to dismantle its power—brick by brick.

As a primarily humanistic and narrative therapist, I believe in holding space for people to tell their stories and explore parts of themselves they may have never before felt safe to share with others. It is through this brave process of standing face-to-face with every part of who we are that we can decide who we would like to be going forward. Although our past does not define us, it does play a role in shaping us, and it is how we carry these experiences throughout our lives that determines how we view ourselves and move through the world. I work to help you begin viewing yourself, your experiences and your relationships in a more nuanced way that can ultimately bring you confidence in navigating the shades of gray that we exist in daily. With unwavering belief in your innate capacity for growth, I provide a nurturing and non-judgmental space where you can truly be seen and heard.

Please feel free to reach out any time. You can book a session or a free 15 min consultation using the links on my website. I would be happy to answer any questions you may have about my approach to therapy and how I can support you. Looking forward to hearing from you!

Martina Gomes

Hello, my name is Martina Gomes (she/her). I believe that everyone has distinctive gifts that help us to navigate the complexities and struggles of life. My approach to psychotherapy is to encourage personal development by providing feedback, warmth, collaboration, and an emotionally supportive space. I’m most experienced with solution-focused, acceptance commitment, and psychodynamic therapy, but my choice of modality will vary depending on your individual needs and wants and based on the most fruitful outcome of the psychotherapeutic relationship. I would love to help you overcome relational and personal obstacles, discover yourself, and strategize towards enriching your life.

Qualifications:

I am a psychotherapist in training at the Toronto Centre for Psychotherapy and Counselling Education (TCPCE), pursuing a graduate-level program recognized by the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO). (He/Him) Our fast-paced world can leave us feeling unsure and overwhelmed. We’re confronted with challenges that result in stress, stuckness, and feeling unable to move forward. We might not have confidence in who we are or where we fit. Change and growth is important, but where do we start? Often times, we just need a few moments to pause and reflect to figure out where to set our feet next and a listening ear can help us cut through the complexity. I believe the best path forward lies within us; sometimes we just need a little bit of help to uncover it.

I take a client-centered and strengths-based approach, and use techniques from acceptance and commitment therapy, helping you to listen to your feelings, needs, desires, and strengths. In session, you can expect to find space to be yourself, to be encouraged, to have the opportunity to explore what’s important to you, to gain insight about your life, to discover your strengths, and to be emotionally supported.

I am currently a student therapist, completing my MA in Counselling Psychology and am qualified to practice under supervision. I work with adolescents, young and experienced adults from 16-100+, I am sensitive to religious and spiritual needs, and want to help you live out your values.
