“Art making is my way of bringing soul back into my life. Soul is the place where the messiness of life is tolerated, where feelings animate the narration of life, where story exists. Soul is the place where I am replenished and can experience both gardens and graveyards. Art is my way of knowing who I am.” Pat Allen, Art is a Way of Knowing
My name is Maddison Miller (She/They). I’m a virtual certified art therapist based out of Vancouver, BC. I graduated from the Vancouver Art Therapy Institute (VATI), and I’ve received my registration as a Registered Therapist Counsellor (RTC). This allows me to work with clients who have Canadian insurance coverage for a RTC.
As an art therapist, art-making and utilizing the creative process to explore our emotions is the heart of my work. My practice centres compassion, curiosity, and a non-linear framework for healing as its core principals. In the same way I understand how trauma and triggers may arise in a non- linear way, I honour how healing is often a non-linear and lifelong journey as well. I aim to have a trauma-informed and anti-oppressive approach in my practice. Empowering and building a therapeutic alliance, fostering a sense of safety, and nurturing feelings of trust are essential to my practice. Art and the creative process become the powerful container in which to hold and witness all our emotions, and together we centre this exploration in curiosity and compassion. My practice deeply honours a client’s social location, and the ongoing and nuanced impacts of colonial and capitalist systems on healing as humans. One of my goals with clients is to build long term, sustainable therapeutic alliances. This looks unique for every client. My therapeutic approach is person-centred, which means I honour the client as the experts on their lived experiences. I also embrace a humanist approach, which honours the ebbs and flows of all emotions which arise. Currently, I work virtually with clients from different provinces all over Canada, I also work with some international clients. No art experience is necessary, and we can work with the art supplies you have on hand around your home.
I offer a free virtual consultation, so if you would like to meet or have any questions pleas reach out by email or phone. I look forward to meeting you!
